Life after a mesothelioma diagnosis can be very difficult and confusion. You may be upset and confused as mesothelioma may be detected only at an advanced stage.

1: Coping with your feelings.

A number emotions or fellings like confusion, worry, depression, denial, anger, negativity, and others may be experienced. You may have different feelings when compared to others, but this doesn?t imply that you aren?t coping with it. The feelings and emotions you get are natural to you so don?t compare these with others.

2: Finding people to talk.

Your friends and family may find it difficult to talk with one another about the condition. This is not unnatural as they may be afraid of scaring you and make it even more complicated to talk about in the future. It is best to get everything out in the open.

3: Informing your children about the condition.

It always difficult to inform children about mesothelioma. It is even more complicated if your children are young. Most patients have young children, or the children of friends with whom they want to share.

It is a good idea to have a word with the child?s teacher to inform them that somebody near and dear to them is seriously ill. The teacher may be helpful in keeping an eye on the child?s behavior for any changes.

4. What can be done?
A feeling of hopelessness is not uncommon when diagnosed with mesothelioma. Knowing more about mesothelioma may help you and your family to take the right action and know what can be expected. It is advisable to talk to your health care professional if more information is needed as he/she will be able to provide proper advice to you Take a list of specific questions and ask your doctor for answers.

Many people plan to fight mesothelioma with a healthy and balanced diet, relaxation techniques like meditation and regular exercise. These are not necessary. However, try them only if you feel that they are OK for you. The Do not make dramatic changes to your lifestyle if you are not ready. Start slowly and keep easily achievable targets. Plan what should be done depending on how you feel on the particular day.

5: Who can provide support?

Your health care provider can provide more help and hospitals can provide advice and support through specially trained staff and advise you on any questions/doubts you may have.

For financial assistance, check insurance policies you may have and see if they cover your condition. It is advised to

Chemotherapy involves the usage of cytotoxic (i.e. anti-cancer) drugs to kill cancerous tissues. Chemotherapy works by destroying the growth mechanism of the cancerous cells.

In some individuals, chemotherapeutic treatment can arrest the progress of mesothelioma for some time; decreasing the symptoms associated with it and improving the quality of life. It can increase the lifespan in some patients with mesothelioma bya few months, but will not generally completely cure it. Chemotherapy usually provides relief from the symptoms. Chemotherapy is usually administered after surgical operations are performed to treat mesothelioma.

Chemotherapy is the best treatment option for mesothelioma that is known to increase the chances of survival in patients suffering from the disease. A research study conducted in the year 2003 by Vogelzang and other scientists compared cisplatin chemotherapy with a combination of cisplatin with pemetrexed chemotherapy in individuals who had not undergone chemotherapy for mesothelioma before and were not candidates for surgery. This trial reported increasef survival chances from chemotherapy in mesothelioma. Vitamin supplements were given to most participants in the trial and side effects related to pemetrexed were comparitively low in individuals receiving pemetrexed when they were also administered 500 mg of folate daily and 1000mg of vitamin B12 every 9 weeks when compared with individuals receiving pemetrexed without any vitamin supplements. In February of 2004, the United States Food and Drug Administration (i.e. the FDA) approved the drug pemetrexed as a treatment drug for malignant pleural mesothelioma. Nevertheless, there are many unanswered questions regarding the correct usage of chemotherapy, when to start the treatment, and the correct number of treatment cycles to be administered.

Cisplatin when administered in combination with raltitrexed increases survival rates similar to that of pemetrexed in combination with cisplatin. However, raltitrexed is no longer available commerically in the market. In individuals who cannottolerate pemetrexed, cisplatin along with gemcitabine or vinorelbine is an alternative option, though significant increases in survival have not been observed for these medications. For individuals in whom it is not possible to use cisplatin, carboplatin may be substituted but some studies have shown comparitively low response rates and high rates of toxicity for carboplatin-based medications, albeit with almost the same survival rates like patients who arebeing administered cisplatin.

Recently in January 2009, the United States FDA okayed the use of conventional therapies like surgical procedures in combination with radiation therapy and chemotherapy on Mesothelioma after studies performed on national level by Duke University came to the conclusion that remission rates increase by almost 50 points.

Mesothelioma is a cancer that develops after inhalation of asbestos dust . In mesothelioma, cancerous cells form in the layer that lines most of visceral organs, called the mesothelium. Mesothelioma commonly occurs in the pleura which lines the lungs and walls of the thorax), but may also develop in the peritoneal membrane, the pericardial sac or the tunica vaginalis.

Mesothelioma develops in people who have worked in environments where they have ingested or inhaled asbestos dust. Any form of exposure like washing the clothes of a person exposed to asbestos, increases the risk of developing mesothelioma. It should be noted that there is no relation between smoking and mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is a permanent cancer and seriously affects the tissues of the lungs and/or abdomen. The symptoms associated with mesothelioma do not manifest just after exposure to asbestos dust. Often it takes anywhere between 20-30 years for visible symptoms to appear. The slow onset of symptoms makes it very difficult to identity mesothelioma when it is still in initial stages.

The treatment options for mesothelioma depend on many factors like the stage of the cancer, the region or location of the cancer, , the duration of the problem, the appearance of the cancerous cells the age of the affected individual. These factors are properly taken in consideration before going for a treatment plan.

The following treatments used to treat mesothelioma:

Surgery: Two surgical procedures are commonly employed: aggressive and palliative surgical procedures.

Aggressive surgery involves the removal of the pleural membrane, the lung, the diaphragm and the pericardium. The aim of this procedure is to excise as much cancerous tissue as possible.

Palliative procedures are used at the advanced stages of mesothelioma. The aim of palliative procedure is to provide relief from the symptoms of mesothelioma.

Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy involves the use of drugs to kill the cancerous cells. Chemotherapeutic drugs may be administered in the form of tablets or injections. For getting better outcomes, chemotherapeutic drugs are often given in combination with other drugs.

Radiation therapy: Radiotherapy or radiation therapy makes use radiations to destroy cancerous cells. It is complex procedure as the cancerous tissues are surrounded by other normal tissues. Radiation therapy may cause damage to normal and healthy tissue. To prevent unwanted side effects, low intensity radiations may be used.

Even though mesothelioma is a fatal disease with low survival rates, identifying the disease in its early stages and starting the right treatment procedure can prolong the life of the affected person by many years.

The early symptoms of mesothelioma are generally non-specific, and may lead to a delay in diagnosis. Sometimes resembling viral pneumonia, pleural mesothelioma patients may present with shortness of breath, chest pain and/or persistent cough; some patients show no symptoms at all. A chest x-ray may show a build-up of fluid or pleural effusion (discussed below). The right lung is affected 60% of the time, with involvement of both lungs being seen in approximately 5% of patients at the time of diagnosis. Less common symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include fever, night sweats and weight loss.

Symptoms of mesothelioma may not appear until 20 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos. Shortness of breath, cough, and pain in the chest due to an accumulation of fluid in the pleural space are often symptoms of pleural mesothelioma.

Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include weight loss and cachexia, abdominal swelling and pain due to ascites (a buildup of fluid in the abdominal cavity). Other symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma may include bowel obstruction, blood clotting abnormalities, anemia, and fever. If the cancer has spread beyond the mesothelium to other parts of the body, symptoms may include pain, trouble swallowing, or swelling of the neck or face.

These symptoms may be caused by mesothelioma or by other, less serious conditions.

Mesothelioma that affects the pleura can cause these signs and symptoms:

# chest wall pain
# pleural effusion, or fluid surrounding the lung
# shortness of breath
# fatigue or anemia
# wheezing, hoarseness, or cough
# blood in the sputum (fluid) coughed up (hemoptysis)

In severe cases, the person may have many tumor masses. The individual may develop a pneumothorax, or collapse of the lung. The disease may metastasize, or spread, to other parts of the body.

Tumors that affect the abdominal cavity often do not cause symptoms until they are at a late stage. Symptoms include:

# abdominal pain
# ascites, or an abnormal buildup of fluid in the abdomen
# a mass in the abdomen
# problems with bowel function
# weight loss

In severe cases of the disease, the following signs and symptoms may be present:

# blood clots in the veins, which may cause thrombophlebitis
# disseminated intravascular coagulation, a disorder causing severe bleeding in many body organs
# jaundice, or yellowing of the eyes and skin
# low blood sugar level
# pleural effusion
# pulmonary emboli, or blood clots in the arteries of the lungs
# severe ascites

A mesothelioma does not usually spread to the bone, brain, or adrenal glands. Pleural tumors are usually found only on one side of the lungs.

There are many people who might have never heard of Mesothelioma and may be ignorant of its symptoms. However, they are at risk of acquiring mesothelioma. Considered a rare type of cancer, mesothelioma affects many people every year. It is necessary to know more about Mesothelioma courses of action that can be taken to stay safe from it. Here are some frequently asked questions on Mesothelioma:

What exactly is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is cancer that forms in the mesothelial layer. Mesothelioma commonly develops in the lungs, heart and organs present in the abdominal cavity. Mesothelioma commonly occurs in the pleural membrane of the lungs—this is called pleural mesothelioma.

What are the causative factors of Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is caused due to exposure to asbestos dust. Asbestos was commonly used in construction materials before the 1970’s. Materials like pipes, insulation materials, flooring, ceiling and roofing tiles also contain significant quantities of asbestos. With health concerns on the rise, the use of asbestos has seen a gradual decrease.

I have been exposed to asbestos. What are the chances of getting mesothelioma?

Usually, the chances of acquiring mesothelioma depend upon the duration of exposure to asbestos dust. The intensity of exposure to asbestos also plays a determining role. Mesothelioma has a long latency time of about 20 to 50 years. This means that mesothelioma may develop long after exposure to asbestos. Generally, people acquire Mesothelioma anywhere in-between 35 and 40 years after getting exposed to asbestos.

How fast does Mesothelioma develop?

In the initial stages, Mesothelioma progresses very slowly. Pain in the lower back and chest pain are the usual symptoms in the initial stages. These may also be accompanied by fever, weight loss and breathing trouble. Once Mesothelioma is acquired, it progresses very fast and treatment must be started as soon as possible.

Is Mesothelioma treatable?

There are several traditional treatment methods for Mesothelioma. These include surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Like other cancers, diagnosing mesothelioma in its initial stages greatly enhances the person’s chances of survival. For this reason, it is advisable for persons who have working in an atmosphere where they might have into contact with asbestos to regularly visit a doctor for screening and checkup.

What legal actions can be taken if diagnosed with mesothelioma?

People suffering from Mesothelioma are eligible for monetary compensation from the manufacturers of asbestos products. In case of death from mesothelioma, dependents of the person are also eligible for monetary compensation.

Mesothelioma diagnosis generally commences with a diseased person’s visit to the physician after prolonged chest pain. This painful sensation is caused as a consequence of a buildup of liquid within the pleural membrane; this is known as pleural effusion & constitutes the common showing symptom associated with cancerous mesothelioma.

Diagnosis of mesothelioma is oftentimes problematic, as the symptoms are confusable to those associated with a number of different conditions. Diagnosing starts with a critical review of the person’s medical record. A history of exposure to asbestos dust can increase clinical suspicion for mesothelioma. A bodily exam is performed, accompanied by thorax X-ray & frequently lung function examinations. The X-ray can disclose pleural thickening normally observed after asbestos dust exposure and increments doubt of mesothelioma. A computed tomography (or CAT) scan or magnetic resonance imaging is commonly done. Whenever a large quantity of liquid is there, defective cells can be observed by cytology if this fluid is aspirated with a syringe. For pleural fluid this is performed by a pleural tap or thorax drainpipe, in ascites with an paracentesis or ascitic drainpipe and in a pericardial effusion with pericardiocentesis. Whilst absence of cancerous cells on cytology doesn’t entirely leave out mesothelioma, it makes it much more improbable, particularly if an secondary diagnosing may be arrived at (for example. TB, coronary failure).

In case cytology is confirming or a plaque is considered as questionable, a tissue biopsy is necessary to affirm a diagnosis of mesothelioma. A physician takes out a sample of cells for exam below a microscope by a diagnostician. A tissue biopsy can be performed in various ways, depending upon where the anomalous region is situated. In case the cancer is in the thorax, the physician may do a thoracoscopy. In this operation, the physician makes a minor cut through the thorax wall and places a fine, illuminated pipe called a thoracoscope into the thorax between two ribs. Thoracoscopy permits the physician to see inside the chest and get tissue samples.

A tissue biopsy is a comparatively minor operation (depending on the area of the neoplasm) during which a little section of questionable tissue is excised. The excised section is analysed by a histopathologist, a skilled person in the field of unhealthy tissue. Histopathological exam can affirm a case of cancerous mesothelioma while as well typing & staging it. Inferring the type and stage may assist doctors advise the best of treatment options.

In case the cancerous cells are in the abdominal cavity, the doctor may do a laparoscopy. To get cells for examen, the physician makes a little surgical incision in the abdominal cavity and introduces a specialised instrument into the abdomen. In case these operations do not give sufficient tissue, more extended diagnostic surgical operations may be required.

Doing work with asbestos dust is the leading risk agent for mesothelioma. A history of asbestos particles exposure exists in most instances. Nevertheless, mesothelioma has been observed in few persons with no known exposure to asbestos dust. In uncommon cases, mesothelioma has as well been connected with radiation, intrapleural Th dioxide (Thorotrast), and breathing in of different fibrous silicates, like erionite.

Asbestos dust exposure is the main hazard agent for mesothelioma. Asbestos dust is a group of minerals at one time utilised in industrial & building materials, but is at present developed in little amounts. Asbestos was formerly found in products such as:

# Roofing tiles & flooring
# Insulating materials
# Doorway gaskets
# roofing substances
# cement
# Plaster
# joint compound
# Rough-textured paint

It’s calculated that approximately eight million American citizens have been exposed to asbestos dust. It normally takes 20-50 yrs for mesothelioma symptoms to show themselves after an individual is exposed to asbestos dust.

When asbestos is fragmented, like during the mining operation or while taking out asbestos insulant, dust can be produced. In case the particles are breathed in or swallowed, the asbestos fibres can take root in the lungs or in the abdomen, where they may induce irritation that can lead to mesothelioma, although how precisely this takes place is not comprehended.

Asbestos refers to a group of substances that come in nature as bulks of hard, elastic fibres that may be divided into fine threads & interwoven. Asbestos has been commonly employed in a lot of industrial applications, including cement, brake liners, roof shingles, floor applications, fabrics, and insulating material. If small asbestos dust particles drift in the air, particularly during the making up process, they might be breathed in or swallowed, and may lead to dangerous health issues. Besides mesothelioma, exposure to asbestos dust increments the chance of lung cancer, asbestosis (which is a noncancerous, degenerative lung disease), & different cancers, like those of the voice box & kidney.

The combining of tobacco & asbestos dust exposure significantly step-ups an individual risk of acquiring cancer of the air duct (lung cancer, bronchial carcinoma). The Kent brand name of cigarettes came with asbestos filters the initial few years of manufacture in the fifties and some instances of mesothelioma have ensued. Smoking contemporary cigarettes doesn’t seem to increment the danger of mesothelioma.

A few research studies indicate that simian virus 40 (represented in short as SV40) can behave as a cofactor in the growth of mesothelioma.

Inform your doctor or health care provider, in case you believe that you are at risk for acquiring mesothelioma. Collectively you’ll be able to monitor your health & choose a course for possible screening techniques.

Bear in mind that mesothelioma is a very slow-moving ailment. Individuals generally don’t develop visible symptoms for decades after getting exposed to asbestos dust.

Mesothelioma , commonly called “asbestos cancer ” is a cancer the affects the organs in the abdomen, the lungs and tissues near the heart. Cancer experts are of the opinion that persons who are exposed to even minute quantites of asbestos dust can acquire mesothelioma after some years. This is particularly a serious concern in workers in industries and construction thus often affecting men more when compared to women. One may not show any visible symptoms of mesothelioma until 40 years after initial exposure, thus making it more difficult to diagnose in the initial stages!

Usually mesothelioma patients are 50-60 years old. One acquires mesothelioma after exposure to asbestos. However the symptoms are not visible until much later.

After the symptoms show themselves, mesothelioma progresses rapidly. In the initial stages, it may be misdiagnosed. Ater initial diagnosis, staging is done and its progress is ascertained.

There are two types of mesothelioma , namely: pleural mesothelioma and peritoneal mesothelioma.

Pleural mesothelioma affects the membrane that lines the lungs and is associated with difficulty in breathing, weight loss, and general ill feeling.
Peritoneal mesothelioma on the other hand affects the membrane linig the stomach and shows symptoms such as abdominal swelling, pain, constipation and bowel obstruction.

The symptoms of mesothelioma are also observed in other conditions. Close to 70-80% of people diagnosed with mesothelioma have exposed history of exposure to asbestos dust. If you have been exposed to mesothelioma in the past and experience these symptoms inform your doctor and get yourself tested for mesothelioma.

Treatment options available for mesothelioma depend on the site of the cancerous growth, the stage , and the individual’s age and health condition. the current general treatment options are surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. Usually, these treatments are given in combination with one another.

# Surgery is the standard treatment for mesothelioma. The tissues lining the chest or the abdomen and other affected tissues are removed by performing surgery. In case of pleural mesothelioma, the entire lung may be removed. This operation is called “pneumonectomy”. In some cases, a section of the diaphragm, i.e. the muscle located below the lungs that aids in breathing, is also surgically removed.

# Radiotherapy, or radiation therapy as it is also known as, uses of high-energy rays to destroy canerous cells and tumors. Radiation therapy killsthe cancerous cells only in the area under treatment. The radioactive rays can be generated either by using a machine or by using radioactive materials.

# Chemotherapy involves the use of drugs i.e. chemical substances to kill cancerous cells directly. Drugs that are used to treat mesothelioma are injected into veins i.e. administered intravenously. Currently, intracavity chemotherapy i.e. administering drugs directly into the chest/abdominal cavity is also being researched.

Mesothelioma is a type of malignant neoplastic disease that’s nearly all of the time caused due to former exposure to asbestos. In this disease, cancerous cells grow in the mesothelium, a protecting lining that surrounds almost all of the body’s inner organs. Its common location is the pleura (outermost lining of the lungs & inner thorax wall), but it can also take place in the peritoneum (the layer of the abdomen), the heart, the pericardium (a pouch that covers the cardiac muscle) or tunica vaginalis.

The cells that lcover the lungs, abdomen, cardiac muscle and different organs is known as mesothelium. Mesothelioma is malignant neoplastic disease of that tissue. It is a uncommon but dangerous form of cancer. It generally begins in the lungs, but may also begin in the abdominal cavity or other organs. Almost all individuals who acquire mesothelioma have worked at occupations where they breathed in asbestos dust. It can take a while - thirty to fifty years - between being close to asbestos and acquiring the disorder. Treatment procedure includes surgical operation, radiation therapy, chemotherapy or all three.

Almost all individuals who acquire mesothelioma may have worked in areas where they breathed in asbestos specks, or they’ve been exposed to asbestos debris and fibre in different ways. Laundering the garments of a family member who worked on with asbestos may also put a individual at danger for acquiring mesothelioma. Contrary to lung cancer, there’s no connection between mesothelioma & tobacco. Compensation via asbestos monetary funds or cases is a significant issue in mesothelioma.

The symptoms associated with mesothelioma consist of breathlessness because of pleural effusion (liquid between the lung & the thorax wall) or thorax wall painfulness, and common symptoms such as body weight reduction. The diagnosing can be made with thorax X-ray and computed axial tomography scan, and is affirmed with a biopsy (cells sample) and microscopical exam. A thoracoscopy (introducing a tubing with a photographic camera into the thorax) can be utilized to get tissue biopsies. It permits the entry of substances like talc to wipe out the pleural space (known as pleurodesis), which forbids more liquid from gathering and compressing on the lung. In spite of treatment with chemotherapy, radiotherapy or occasionally surgical operation, the disorder runs a insufficient medical prognosis. Research around screening examinations for the early spotting of mesothelioma is in progress.

Treatment for mesothelioma depends upon the area of the cancerous cells, the level of the disorder, and the person’s age & general wellness. Accepted treatment choices consist of surgical operation, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, or a combination.

Current mesothelioma treatments have been explored and formulated with the promise of succeeding wherever conventional techniques haven’t. Mesothelioma investigators are hopeful that brand-new mesothelioma treatment modes will in time show to be productive, although they’ve yet to generate outcomes that are any good than conventional techniques. Regrettably, none of the treatment schemes have been established to be especially operational against the disorder.
